June officially kicks off summer, so it's time to head outdoors. I've chosen some perfect screw-cap wines to go with your beautiful alfresco meals ahead.
Roll Out the Riesling
Often thought of as sweet, Riesling actually comes in a spectrum of styles. In Riesling's best cases, a striking acidity balances the fruit, giving way to a refreshing crispness.
- Bloom (Germany; $7)
- McWilliam's Hanwood Estate (Australia; $12)
- Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Dry Riesling (Washington State; $11)
Pinot Noir for Red Wine Fans
If only red wine goes into your glass, grab a bottle of Pinot Noir. Generally lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, it makes a fine picnic choice. Try it with our burgers, particularly the salmon burger, for a classic pairing.
- Kim Crawford Marlborough Pinot Noir (New Zealand; $17)
- Big Fire Pinot Noir (Oregon; $18)
Pinot Grigio, Please
Pack Pinot Grigio in your picnic cooler. Its subtle fruitiness makes it easy to sip, and its crispness pairs nicely with just about anything you spread on the blanket.
- Ciao Bella (Italy; $10)
- Pepi (California; $11)
- Hogue (Washington State; $10)
