Your Party Red
Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) Century Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon ($8). You’ll get big, rich blackberry flavors and a popular appeal that will segue nicely from appetizers through dinner, especially if you’re serving a hearty, meaty entrée. For a couple bucks more, choose Cellar No. 8 Cabernet Sauvignon ($10); it brings dark-fruit flavors, a little peppery spice and a richness you’d expect at a much higher price tag.
Your Party White
I still vote for Chardonnay for the all-out crowd-pleaser. An affordable any-occasion pick is Fortant de France Chardonnay ($8). To veer off the Chardonnay path, try René Barbier Mediterranean White ($6), a brisk and refreshing wine that will go with all sorts of savory nibbles you put out for friends.
For Spicy Asian Dishes
Hogue Gewürztraminer ($9). Whether you pick up something from your favorite takeout spot or stir together a quick noodle dish at home, few things will chase away the winter blahs better than bringing some Asian spices to your table. This rich, aromatic wine’s fruity sweetness will nicely offset
the heat.
Your Any-Night White
Turning Leaf Reserve Pinot Grigio ($8): Casual wine drinkers often appreciate Pinot Grigio for its easy-sipping, food-friendly appeal, but some bottles can be mild to a fault. This pick offers a light, fresh appeal, but with plenty of fruit flavor to add character. Pour a glass with fish, chicken and vegetarian entrees.
