In October 2001, New York City food and travel writer Paul Disbrowe took an assignment that brought her to Fredericksburg, Texas, to write about a bakery. She penciled in a trip to a nearby guest ranch, The Hart & Hind, hoping it might provide another story. Little did she know she would become that story’s central character.

In Cowgirl Cuisine: Rustic Recipes and Cowgirl Adventures from a Texas Ranch (William Morrow, March 2007), Paula tells the tale of her life-changing decision to trade in her stilettos to become a dusty boot-clad chef at Hart & Hind and serves up fun and inventive recipes:
