Kid’s love whimsical cakes, and now you can actually make one at home. We love the new book Easy Cut-Up Cakes for Kids, which shows you how to make cute cakes without a staff of pastry chefs and special equipment. Most use a 9-inch round cake pan, cupcake molds or a 13-by-9-inch pan. From there the book gives instructions on how to cut and assemble and frost the cake for a variety of characters from a turtle to a rocket ship. Best yet, though, is that you can use your favorite cake recipe or a box mix. For instructions on how to make the Dandy Lion (above) and other cakes go to relishmag.com/cakes
Make a List, Check it Twice
Great minds think alike, so it came as no surprise when we ran across a nifty website called relishrelish.com. Not affiliated with our magazine, the site delivers menus, shopping lists and recipes straight to your email inbox weekly for $7 per month. It’s a well-known fact that folks who shop with a list spend less money at the store—and eat better all week. For three free months of their most popular freezer meals, use the code FREEZER when you sign up at relishrelish.com.
How Sweet it Isn’t
Kids 6 to 11 years old polish off 76 pounds of added sugar per year—that’s ½ cup per day or 5 pounds in 3 weeks.
Shake Down
Here’s how some of the fast food chocolate shakes stack up:
• Burger King Shake, 16 ounces = 470 calories, 14g fat
• McDonald Triple Thick Shake, 16 ounces = 580 calories, 14g fat
• Cold Stone Creamery Like-It Fudge PB&C, 12-ounce shake = 985 calories, 69g fat
Regarding calcium, Burger King’s provides 35 percent of your calcium needs for the day, McDonald’s has 45 percent, and Cold Stone Creamery has 50 percent—not too bad.—Dr. Jo
A Bowl of Cereal for Dinner?
Doesn’t neccesarily mean a night in your jammies on the couch. Not if you live in a city with one of the growing cereal bars and restaurants that serves, you got it, cold cereal. Take two scoops of any cereal, add a topping and your choice of milk, and you’re ready to dig in. One of the hottest cereal bars is Cereality Cereal Bar and Café, who’s most popular blend is Life Experience Life—Life cereal topped with bananas, almonds and a drizzle of honey. Looking for a cereal fix? In addition to Cereality’s six locations in Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, try The Cereal Bowl (Miami), Cerealicious (Toronto), Cereal Barn & Peanut Butter Cafe (Bloomington, Ind.) and Bowls—A Cereal Joint (Raleigh, N.C.). A bowl of cereal for dinner just got better.—William I. Lengeman III
