A Good Glass of Wine September 2007

Wine connoisseurs have consistently showered praise upon New Zealand for its zippy and vibrant Sauvignon Blancs—and indeed, these lively sips remain worth any wine-lover’s attention. But lately, winemakers there have been winning accolades for gorgeous yet reasonably priced Pinot Noirs, Rieslings and Chardonnays, too—bottles that bring a windfall of elegance at moderate prices. For a crash course on what makes New Zealand wines shine, head to the wine shop and ask for two of the country’s most reliable labels: St. Clair and Kim Crawford. Both wineries win praise for their amazingly consistent, high-quality bottles.

Kim Crawford

  • Kim Crawford Marlborough Pinot Noir ($17): Bright fruit flavors mesh with a lush, silky appeal—enjoy with the last grilled pork chops of grilling season.
  • Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc ($17): Try this refreshing, aromatic wine as an aperitif and with salads that star tomatoes.
  • Kim Crawford Marlborough Unoaked Chardonnay ($17): Perfect when you crave the richness of a Chard with a refreshing zing of a Sauvignon Blanc. Great as a stand-in for a cocktail.
  • Kim Crawford Marlborough Dry Riesling ($17): Enjoy both polish and pizzazz—and pair it with any foods tweaked with Asian influences.
Saint Clair
  • Saint Clair Vicar’s Choice Sauvignon Blanc ($14): Exactly the sort of racy sip that made New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blancs famous. Enjoy with herb-flecked chicken and fish.
  • Saint Clair Marlborough Unoaked Chardonnay ($16): Crisp and refined—try with pasta primavera and robust cheeses.
  • Saint Clair Marlborough Riesling ($16): This is the Riesling to try if you think you don’t like Riesling. Enjoy fresh lime, floral and stone-fruit flavors. An excellent foil to ham and sausages.

Wini,

Good choices to write about since summer is ending. Sauvignon Blanc is one of my all time favorite varietals. I think it is an underrated wine. I'm waiting for fall to arrive. I think Pinot Noir is a natural wine for the transitioning of the seasons. Maybe a pinot tasting and pairing would be a great thing to write about and include recipes. Many styles of pinot, that would pair with a variety of foods. Just a thought,

Take Care,
