a good glass of wine

A Good Glass of Wine December 2007

Wine columnist Wini Moranville guides you to the best bottles for the money.

If I had to choose just one wine for the holidays, it might be a merry and bright Riesling from Germany. Whether they’re a little bit sweet or a little bit brisk, most star loads of fresh, luscious fruit that so many wine drinkers love. Their fruitiness is a good match for salty and spicy hors d’oeuvres, while their tangy acidity makes them shine with heftier foods, as well (roast turkey, anyone?)

S.A. Prüm Blue Slate Riesling 2005:
This one shows a racier side of Riesling, with a touch of bright, zippy citrus in the mix ($10).

Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Riesling 2006:
Find refreshing peachy-apricot flavors in this light, versatile pick—a great afternoon wine ($17).

St. Urbans-Hof Riesling 2006:
Honeysuckle and pear notes mingle with touches of grapefruit and minerals in this easy-drinking choice ($14).

Two Princes Riesling, 2006:
The hallmark stone-fruit flavors you’d expect in a good Riesling are balanced by a brisk finish ($13).

Dr. L Riesling 2005:
The sweetest in this group, this is the wine to choose if you love, love, love a generous abundance of ripe, succulent fruit in your glass ($13)
