A Good Glass of Wine March 2008

While I love to seek out obscure wines from boutique shops, it’s a thrill to score a head-turning wine from a supermarket shelf. This month’s picks are cases in point. And once I gave them a chance in the glass, I thought, “Wow—where have you been all my life!” I’ve also chosen wines with a little heft. Spring may be on the calendar, but the cold March wind still blows till we get there. Let’s leave the lighter wines for summer.

Gnarly Head 2006 Old Vine Zinfandel (Lodi, California; $12): Remember when you could find a ripe, opulent Zin at a very reasonable price? You still can with this fully fruity, plush and jammy, warm, velvety pick.

Gallo Family Vineyards 2005 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon ($15): Lush, dark fruit flavors are framed by a little toasty vanilla notes for a well-crafted sip from the Gallo family.

Red Truck 2005 California Red Wine ($10): Soft, approachable, and brimming with cherries and spice, this mostly Syrah and Petite Syrah blend is a great pizza-pasta-burger wine.

Coastal Ridge 2006 California Pinot Grigio ($7): Some Pinot Grigios all but disappear on the palate; here’s a nicely fruity pick that lingers on the palate and in the memory.

Banrock Station 2006 Semillon-Chardonnay (South Eastern Australia; $6): If you love the round fullness of a Chardonnay, but wish it could be just a little sweeter, this lush, fruity wine—with just enough citrus for balance—is for you.

Thank you, so much, for your article. When I visited Napa Valley last year, I fell in love with Peju Winery's Zinfandel ($25/bottle). Since then, I've tried some less expensive zins, but have always been disappointed.

The Gnarly Head Zinfandel is FANTASTIC. I am able to purchase this wine in my local grocery store for $9.99, and the taste, finish, etc. of this wine is very comperable to the more expensive wines.

Thanks again!

Gnarley Head is a great bang for the buck wine, and Bogle Petite Sirah is another nice red wine. A pick for pinot is Leaping Lizard Pinot Noir, it is fruit forward and easy sipping!
