A Good Glass of Wine

Wine columnist Wini Moranville guides you to the best bottles for the money.

There’s a saying in the wine world that Americans talk dry but drink sweet. See for yourself—next time you gather friends, put out a few sweeter wines alongside the bone-dry sips and see which gets poured most. You’ll likely discover there’s a place for dry and sweet on any table.

I’m not talking sweet like lollipops, but sweet as in fully captivating, drippingly ripe fruit, from fragrant oranges and lush golden apples to honeyed pears, peaches and apricots. If that sounds like something you’d like to indulge in this spring, look for these lush, fruit-focused sips.

Blue Fish Sweet Riesling (Pfalz, Germany; $10): Pour this one with sushi—its sweet nectarine flavors and bright, clean finish will help tame the wasabi.

Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling (Washington State; $11): Pineapple and peach flavors star in this fully fruity, decidedly sweet sip. Try it with chile-sparked Asian foods.

Ca’ Del Solo Vineyard Muscat (Monterey County, California; $15): Ripe melon flavors mingle with a hint of orange zest and vaguely spicy-musky notes. A shoo-in with curries.

Rosemont Traminer Riesling (South Eastern Australia; $10): This blend of Gewurztraminer and Riesling results in a generously fruity, rich, round sip that will hold up well to roasted spring chicken.

Domaine Ste. Michelle Frizzante (Columbia Valley, Washington; $12): Voluptuous red-apple flavors amidst delicate bubbles make this sparkler a lovely choice for springtime celebrations.

Good picks! I purchase the Pacific Rim for guests when hosting a wine and appetizet gathering. It is a great wine for newbies of the wine world.
