We’re heading into picnic season, but it’s not quite summer yet. So, before we turn to the light, bright, zippy whites of summer, let’s hang on to satisfying, fuller-bodied versions of Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc for just a while longer.
A Softer Side of Sauvignon Blanc
These Sauvignon Blancs (sometimes called Fumé Blanc) have plenty of crispness along with fullness and body:
- Beringer Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc ($16): Savor aromas of citrus blossoms and honeydew and cantaloupe flavors.
- Frei Brothers Reserve Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($17): A veritable fruit salad of peaches, pears and nectarines with tropical fruit notes.
- Chateau St. Jean Fumé Blanc (Sonoma County; $13): A tempting blend of citrus, spice and herbs.
These Pinot Grigio (a.k.a. Pinot Gris) wines are rich and fruity, too.
- Luna Vineyards Pinot Grigio (Napa Valley; $18): Savor luscious orchard-fruit flavors with just a hint of citrus.
- Kim Crawford Pinot Gris (Marlborough, $17): With an irresistibly rich mouthfeel amidst pear and apple flavors, this is a Pinot Gris for Chardonnay lovers.
