A Vote for Cozy Restaurant

Even in an election year, presidential talk is in good taste at the Cozy Restaurant in Thurmont, Md., where diners can order Richard Nixon’s Western Salad loaded with avocados and chicken or Thomas Jefferson’s Crème Brulée. Opened in 1929, the Cozy Restaurant and Country Inn is six miles from Camp David and frequented by family members of presidents, the White House press corps, foreign leaders and other guests at the presidential retreat. “We’ve had the cabinets of every president here. Condoleezza Rice has been here twice lately,” says owner Jerry Freeze, 72. “Mamie Eisenhower used to eat here, and Winston Churchill stopped in for drinks.” Through the years, the Cozy menu has included fare with presidential ties, such as Chocolate-Orange Cake, a favorite of Gerald Ford’s son, Steve. One room of the Cozy is devoted to the Camp David Museum and includes gifts from guests and presidential mementoes, including Herbert Hoover’s fishing license. cozyvillage.com
