A Good Glass of Wine October 2008

Wine columnist Wini Moranville guides you to the best bottles for the money.

What gives wine a “wow” factor? Sometimes, its about balance and finesse, with no one aroma or flavor jumping out, but rather each gradually revealing themselves to you, layer upon layer, as you sip. Other times it’s all about personality—compelling up-front flavors that continue to linger on the palate and in the memory long after the sip is swallowed. These bottles punch above their weight, giving you lots of “wow” for your dollar no matter what style of wine you enjoy.

Greg Norman 2005 Petite Sirah (Paso Robles, CA; $15): Aromas of chimney smoke and crushed spice flatter the plum and licorice flavors for a wine that’s just the ticket for seekers of serious reds.

Doña Paula Estate 2006 Malbec (Luján de Cuyo, Argentina; $16): The fruit draws you right in, but the intriguing licorice, smoke and spice notes make you keep coming back for more. An uncommon red for the adventure-seeker.

Lost Angel 2008 Muscat Canelli (California; $16): A lightly floral white wine for those who love ripe, voluptuous fruit in their glass. A fabulous brunch bottle.

Jekel Vineyards 2006 Pinot Noir (Monterey County, CA; $18): Those passionate about Pinot know just how hard it is to find that truly great under-$20 pick. Well, here’s one for the record! Savor bright berry and baking spice notes in this richly opulent bottle.

J. Lohr 2006 “Seven Oaks” Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles, CA; $17): For those who love their Cabs on the deeply fruity side. The warm vanilla-and -toast notes make it more than just an easy sip.

Rosemount 2006 Show Reserve Chardonnay (Mudgee, Australia; $15): A great combo of creamy roundness and citrus-pear refreshment. If you’re die-hard for Chard, give this a go.

EOS 2005 Zinfandel (Paso Robles, CA; $18): For lovers of ripe, fruity red Zins. With hints of spice and chocolate mingling among bright and jammy cherry-berry flavors, this one’s for you.

Wini,

Some great picks! I want to try the EOS Zin and the Jekel Pinot. I've had the J. Lohr Cab years ago, but maybe it's time to re-visit it!

Also, I thing there was a Greg Norman Petite Sirah you mentioned; I may want to check that out as well. Thanks for the tips. Go and visit my work at
