More than a century of knowledge rests in 101-year-old Nora Church’s hands. Her hands have planted and peeled, chopped and canned. With the work of her hands, she has fed her nine children and a host of warmly welcomed guests. Her daughters learned to cook from these hands; so, too, their daughters, and their daughters’ daughters. Nora’s hard-working hands know no rest: Last year, she preserved five quarts of applesauce for herself. This year, the Virgina native will “put up” beans. In Nora’s capable hands, strength and love reside.
