This and That April 2009

Breakfast shouldn't be complicated-that's why greasy spoons, like the Waffle House, are just the thing.  Cheese'n'eggs with a waffle are the perfect combination of savory, sweet and comfort. The eggs are scrambled with processed American cheese (no artisan goat or blue) and served with white toast and whipped margarine in a tub-no pomp and circumstance, no Starbucks, no servers named Brent.

And that's exactly why breakfast is perfect for dinner. There's something comforting and zen-like about whipping up scrambled eggs or pancakes for dinner. It's like you have the night off.

And eggs can save the day. In Bridget Jones's Diary, barrister Mark Darcey swings into action and whips up scrambled eggs just in time to save the guests from Bridget's "blue soup."

Speaking of colors, try our Swiss Chard Scramble at relishmag.com/scramble. It's true: Green eggs are good here, there, anywhere. Got a favorite breakfast? Write to us at editorial@relishmag.com.

Better Bacon
We're not in love with low-fat bacon. So we were skeptical of the Bacon Freak's Gourmet Bacon Club, which specializes in hand-rubbed, hand-seasoned natural bacon that happens to be lower in fat too.  According to owner Rocco Loosbrock, his bacon is made the old-fashioned way-"no fake wood, no fake flavors, hand-rubbed and no water added." Water is what makes bacon spatter.  He's right. The Bourbon Street Cajun-Style Country Bacon was virtually spatter-free and tasted great, for only 7 grams of fat per 2 slices. Green & White
Change may be coming to the White House lawn. Eat the View and the WHOFarm (White House Organic Farm project) are working to transform the White House lawn into a garden. Members of these grassroots groups are circulating petitions and rallying support to ask the Obamas to plant an organic vegetable garden on the lawn. Produce from the garden would go to local food pantries to feed the hungry, supplement school lunches in the District of Columbia and even feed the First Family. To sign petitions and find out more, go to eattheview.org and thewhofarm.org
