a good glass of wine

A Good Glass of Wine February 2006

This month I’ve unearthed some terrific values on wines that are just right for cozying up by the fire with your sweetie: hearty reds, seductive whites and lovely little sparklers.

Viognier
With its floral aromas and luscious fruit and vanilla flavors, this wine is currently making a splash among wine lovers in a “move over, Chardonnay” sort of way.

  • Yalumba “Y” Series from South Australia ($10.99)
  • Smoking Loon ($9)
  • Clay Station ($13)

Prosecco
Bubblies never need to break the bank, especially if you reach for the Italian classic, Prosecco.

  • Zardetto ($14)
  • Martini and Rossi ($13-$15)
  • Mionetto Il Prosecco, available in a half bottle ($6.99)

Cabernet Sauvignon
Often called a “big” wine because of its bold, juicy flavors and rich, full body, Cabernet Sauvignon will warm up any night and goes great with chocolate, too—how perfect for Valentine’s Day.

  • Rex Goliath ($8.99)
  • Hahn Central Coast ($14)
  • Little Penguin ($8)

Wine columnist, Wini Moranville, guides you to the best bottles for the money.
